The home pictures featured in this special feature, (a barn actually in France) defines the word patina. With it's worn finishes, vintage linens and tapestries, and charm of the homeowner's collected objects, it is my pick for Inspiration, as part of my monthly series.

February: Quirky & Deliberate (A Knowing Eye Makes Sense of A Mad Mix In Interior Decor) 

You might ask, What's the secret to mixing eras, styles, sizes, and shapes without it looking like a disaster? It's all trial and error.  Play around with it, use your imagination. You might put it in, and then take it out. You have to mix things and be honest - if it doesn't work, change it! You will make mistakes.  That's the art of mixing it up to create your perfect home. My best advice is to admit your mistakes and try again. 

Homes where everything matches and it looks like you've walked into a showroom, well in my opinion they lack "personal style" Some people think a house that's consistent from room to room with just one type of thing is good style.  It all comes down to contrasts: mix hard with soft, square with round, blocky with leggy. 

Rules and guidelines are for the faint-of-heart and basically worthless.  When we read lists of  'Always do this' and 'Never do that,' they never make much sense to me and much more sense to most of you.  A very good decorator might tell you that all four legs of a piece of furniture must always sit within an area rug.  That's absolutely right, except when it's absolutely wrong.  I use both situations, and both are correct in my style!  Now go mix it up!
